It’s been quite a while since I’ve played around in Photoshop, so I picked a random tutorial on the web and can now do water droplets. Am I good guy to have around, or what? ;-)

The once and future university « Jon Udell: “As I scrubbed back and forth on the timeline looking for the part I remembered, my daughter — who was then between high school and college — watched over my shoulder. Eventually she said: ‘So, the students just sit there?’”

Photos

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

My daughter has been scanning a lot of old family photos lately, and it has me thinking about the ebbs and flows of my motivation for taking pictures. There are times when I am the total photo geek–carrying around some form of camera nearly everywhere I go. Other times, though, I don’t even think about taking a camera to anything for extended periods of time. I suppose it’s not a problem–we have more pictures of our family than anyone in their right mind would ever want to review–but I wonder what my great-grandkids will think of my picture taking? Will they be able to see them? Will a storage failure of some sort between now and then wipe everything out? Not earth-shattering in their importance, but these are questions I ponder now and then.

Productivity

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

What is is about a job that needs to be done that triggers such lame lists of alternate activity? Many times, when I sit down to get to work on something productive I am suddenly reminded of how desperately the stack of papers on my desk needs attention, how not shiny my cell phone has become, or how I always wanted to learn more about Japanese slang. Even worse is when the productivity requires that I use a computer (I know…hardly ever happens). I can’t figure out how to get Word to automatically center align tabs, so I dive in to the help file, online forums, and endless google sifting until I find my answer…which doesn’t look like I expected, so I try another program, which needs to run a version update that includes new features, which I have to explore now or of course I’ll never remember… and suddenly I’m out of time.

Lame. I know.
